Cow Creeks - A Tale of Strong Recovery
Douglas County · Oregon
The panel puts the treaty price at under three cents an acre. The tribe's own figure is 2.3 cents, for land the government was soon selling to settlers at $1.25. The reservation the treaty promised never came, and in 1954 Congress terminated a tribe it had never served. The Cow Creeks pressed a land claim from 1980 and settled for $1.5 million. They put all of it in an endowment and spend only the interest. Congress restored federal recognition by unanimous consent on December 29, 1982.
