Town of Woodbridge
Woodbridge, San Joaquin County · California
No plaque stands for the town. Jeremiah Woods and Alexander McQueen put a ferry across the Mokelumne here in 1852, and a new road from Stockton to Sacramento bent to use it. Woods bridged the river in 1858, and when the town was laid out in April 1859 it took its name from his bridge. Woodbridge grew into a crossroads with a seminary and an Odd Fellows hall on Main Street, and the name is the whole of its founding story: a man's surname and the thing he built.
