The Tendoy Mountains
Beaverhead County · Montana
The mountains carry the name of the leader the panel gives one line. Tendoy, of Shoshone and Bannock parents, led the Agaidika, the Lemhi people, from 1863, after miners killed the chief known as Snag, and his band spent long seasons on the Beaverhead near Dillon. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs credited him with keeping the Lemhi Valley at peace through the Nez Perce War of 1877. He died on May 9, 1907, as the removal to Fort Hall began, and the people's cattle and farm machinery went south by rail from Red Rock, north of here.
