The Montana Road
Beaverhead County · Montana
The traveler quoted in the panel's corner was Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, fourth Earl of Dunraven, an Irish peer and former war correspondent who came through in the summer of 1874 to hunt in the Yellowstone country with Texas Jack Omohundro. His account, The Great Divide, was published in London in 1876. The man bored by the road's levelness went on to two America's Cup challenges, losing to Vigilant with Valkyrie II in 1893 and withdrawing Valkyrie III in 1895; after accusing the defenders of cheating he was expelled from the New York Yacht Club.
