The Pellerin-Chauffe House
Breaux Bridge, St. Martin County · Louisiana
Surveyors preparing the National Register nomination in 1984 counted about 89 late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century houses in Breaux Bridge and picked six as town landmarks. This is the showiest of them. Edmond Pellerin is credited as builder and Emile Bergeron as carpenter. It is a one-and-a-half-story Queen Anne Revival cottage with Eastlake details: scroll-sawn trim, brackets, a stained-glass window in the front gable and a gallery that turns a 45-degree corner. The cistern, well house and barns out back survive too, so it still reads as a working homestead.
