The Bozeman Trail

Sweet Grass County · Montana

The panel calls the road west of the Bighorn safe and leaves out whose road it was. This was Crow country under the 1851 Fort Laramie treaty, and the Apsáalooke mostly met emigrants as traders: in July 1864 two hundred came into one camp on Clarks Fork with robes and moccasins to trade. Their patience had terms. In spring 1865, pressed by the trains and by Lakota raids, the Crow told the Upper Missouri agent, Mahlon Wilkinson, that Bridger's road crossed their country, and that if no treaty came and their annual goods stopped, war would follow.
