The Beaver's Dam
Lake County · Montana
White Beaver's lodge, Wild Horse Island, is Čt'išeʔém in Salish and kwiⱡq̓anqmi in Kootenai. At about 2,160 acres it is the largest island in the lake, and its English name comes from the tribes' practice of pasturing horses there, away from raiders. It was opened to homesteading with the rest of the reservation in 1910, and in the late 1970s most of it passed to the state as a primitive park. Bighorn sheep were brought out in 1939. A few horses still run there, though a park ranger says they are not descended from the old herds.
