Tehuacana Cemetery
Pearsall, Frio County · Texas
Erected 1967
Tehuacana was a settlement before it was a graveyard. Families from Hondo Canyon in Bandera County arrived about 1870, and in 1872 they built a schoolhouse that served as church and community center, with a music room soon added by Perry Wilson. A Methodist Episcopal church formed in 1875 in the homes of Perry and Levi Wilson, and a gristmill and blacksmith shop followed in the early 1880s. Children from Moore Hollow attended school here until 1881. Smallpox struck in the 1880s, and local tradition says the second outbreak emptied the community.
