Mountain Home, the community H. L. Nelson named, was settled about 1856, and Nelson established its post office in 1879. For a short time early in the twentieth century the town was called Eura. It had 150 people in 1946; in 1983 about sixty lived within a mile of the post office, which served 350 families, and the town had a store, a motel and a church. Ranching has always been the main business. Mountain Home is also home to the Texas Fisheries Research Station, the Texas Catholic Boys Camp and the Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting.

What the plaque says

Sunset Cemetery The earliest marked graves in this cemetery are those of James and Susan Dowdy's four children. They were killed by Indians in 1878, soon after the family migrated from Goliad. However, local tradition says the first interment in that of M. B. Shults. Plain stones mark burial sites of four Byas children who died in the 1880s typhoid epidemic. Early pioneer H. L. Nelson (1835-1922), who established Mountain Home Post Office, is buried here. Land for this 4-acre cemetery has been acquired from the A. E. Oehler heirs, M. D. Henderson, and Sunset School when it closed in 1953. (1979)
