Stones from Log Flour Mill
Roberts County · South Dakota
Erected 1952
The millstones came from the agency where the Sisseton and Wahpeton settled after the treaty of 1867, and the man who led them through those years is buried near it. Gabriel Renville, Ti'Wakan, was born about April 1825 on the west shore of Lake Traverse, of Dakota, French Canadian and British descent. He became chief of scouts under Henry Sibley in 1863, was named chief by Sibley in 1866, and a year later his people declared him chief for life. He died on August 26, 1892 and lies on a bluff near Old Agency.
