St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church

San Diego, Duval County · Texas
Erected 1996

The church stands in a town that began as a land grant. About 1800 the Spanish government granted San Diego de Arriba and San Diego de Abajo, eight leagues in all, to Julián Flores and his son Ventura, and the Flores family received its deed in 1812. In 1848 Ventura sold land on San Diego Creek to Pablo Pérez, who built stone houses and brought families, and the place was called Perezville. Sources differ on when it became San Diego, and on whether its first post office opened in 1852 or 1867. The railroad arrived in 1879.
