Site of the Town of Jonesville

Huntington vicinity, Angelina County · Texas
Erected 1936

Jonesville was named for its founder, Martin William Jones, called Gobbler, a North Carolinian born in 1784 who married Rhoda Hodges in Tennessee in 1804 and died in 1879 at ninety-five. The town never built a courthouse, and county offices were rented. The seat went to a vote in 1858. Texas Escapes reports a recorded count of 221 for Angelina, as Homer was then called, and 130 for Jonesville, with ballots reportedly burned, a fight between rival groups and forty to fifty indictments. Jonesville never grew again, and no one lives at the site now.
