Site of the Town of Homer
Lufkin, Angelina County · Texas
Erected 1936
Homer won the county seat in 1858 and was renamed Angelina, but the name did not stick and reverted in 1862. Marion's log courthouse was moved here, then replaced by a two-story frame building in 1873. The town never passed 500 people. The railroad took a more direct route through Lufkin in the early 1880s, a courthouse fire came in late 1891, and Lufkin became seat in 1892. Homer fell to 166 people by 1904 and 75 a decade later. An 1860s feud between the Gilley and Windham families killed several men, including Sheriff William Reed McMullen.
