Site of Fort Boggy

Centerville, Leon County · Texas
Erected 1936

The fort's captain has three accounts of his death. Thomas N. B. Greer was born in Tennessee in 1806, came to Texas in 1835 and, the Handbook says, manned one of the Twin Sisters at San Jacinto. President Lamar commissioned him on February 22, 1840, to raise the Boggy and Trinity Rangers. The Handbook puts his death in action on the Trinity near Alabama, in Houston County, in June 1842. The county entry ties it to an 1841 retaliatory raid, and the 1985 plaque to a scouting party in 1841.
