Site of Congregational Church

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

The congregation is older than the building, older than the state, and it still meets a mile from here. A small group of men voted it into being in a one-room schoolhouse at Third and I in September 1849, most of them Swiss and German settlers from Sutter's Fort, with Joseph Benton as their pastor for the next fourteen years. They laid a cornerstone on this lot in 1854 and moved on again in 1926. What the landmark marks is an address the church left, and an office building stands on it.
