Site of Confederate Arms Factory
Lancaster, Dallas County · Texas
Erected 1936
The plaque's partners were a business as well as a list of names. The Dallas Herald announced a Lancaster gunmaking partnership in February 1862, and on April 11 the state Military Board agreed to buy up to 3,000 Colt-pattern pistols from Tucker, Sherrard and Company. John M. Crockett signed with the others and later reported delays for want of steel, tools and workers. Collectors credit about 400 pistols to the shop, though firearms historian William Edwards argues that surviving serial numbers do not fit that count. The Handbook's Lancaster entry spells the name Sherrod.
