Site of American Ranch and Hotel

Plumas County began in a hotel. On March 18, 1854, three commissioners met at James Bradley's American Hotel, the first house in Quincy built of sawed lumber, to carve a new county out of Butte, and the hotel served as its seat until something better could be found. Plumas Lodge of the Masons, instituted that May, met in an upstairs room until its own temple was finished in 1855. Nothing of the hotel stands at 355 Main Street, and no plaque names it; only a printed state sign marks the site.
