Sherwood Y. Reamos
Buckhorn, Austin County · Texas
Erected 1936
The stone gives Reams a single duty at Harrisburg, and the finding aid for his 1836 letter at the Briscoe Center fills in the rest. Sherwood Young Reams, born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1812, came to Texas from Tennessee in 1835 and served under James C. Neill. Discharged for his health, he reenlisted in July 1836 for three months. He married Sarah Atkinson in 1837 and, two years after her 1853 death, Mary Backman. In 1870 they left Peach Creek for Buckhorn, where H. S. Smith had a gin and gristmill by 1873.
