Historical Marker
Seth Ingram
Matagorda County · Texas
Erected 1936
Seth Ingram laid out San Felipe de Austin for Stephen F. Austin, and the plaque leaves out the worst day of his life. On September 2, 1830, he killed the lawyer John G. Holtham in San Felipe after a quarrel over defamatory handbills. He and his storekeeping partner Hosea League spent about sixteen months in jail, were freed on bond in January 1832, and were tried and acquitted that year. By 1834 he lived in Matagorda, where he served on the Committee of Safety, handled his brother Ira's estate, and in 1845 became a trustee of Matagorda University.
