Richard Royster Royall
Matagorda, Matagorda County · Texas
Erected 1936
Royall reached Texas in 1832 aboard the Emblem with his family and twenty enslaved people, and he built a plantation in Matagorda County, Cedar Lane on Caney Creek. By September 1835 he chaired the Matagorda Committee of Public Safety, and in October the Central Committee at San Felipe, which raised men and money before the Consultation met. He advanced about $3,000 of his own, pressed Houston to take the offensive and quarreled with Ira Ingram. He lost the 1836 convention seat to Samuel Rhoads Fisher. The Handbook says he was buried at Cedar Lane, not in town.
