Searles Lake Borax Discovery
Trona, San Bernardino County · California
John Searles found borax lying on the surface of the lake in 1862 and worked it with his brother Dennis as the San Bernardino Borax Mining Company from 1873 until 1897. What he had actually found was far bigger than borax. Meltwater draining off the ice-age Sierra concentrated in this basin and left borax, potash, soda ash, salt cake and lithium stacked in one dry bed. Trona still works it, and the plant runs through the night.
