Saint Peter's Episcopal Church

Kerrville, Kerr County · Texas
Erected 1977

St. Peter's began under the missionary district of Western Texas and its first bishop, Robert W. B. Elliott, who made San Antonio his headquarters and St. Mark's Church his cathedral. In his thirteen years three more San Antonio churches were founded: St. Luke's in a suburb on San Pedro Creek, St. John's out of a Sunday school and free dispensary for the poor, and St. Paul's beside Fort Sam Houston. He refounded St. Mary's Hall, and at Seguin, which had no public school, the church opened St. Andrew's Academy for boys and Montgomery Academy for girls.

What the plaque says

Saint Peter's Episcopal Church Pioneer Episcopalians worshiped at the Kerr County Courthouse in 1881. In 1884-88, they erected a small frame Gothic church. The Rev. J. E. Hole served 1890-91 as first resident rector; the Rev. Richard Galbraith, 1894-1908, as first permanent rector. In 1908 Saint Peter's became a parish. The Rev. J. E. Ellis, 1908-13 rector, founded a Boy Scout troop here, before scouting had originated nationally. The present church was built in 1928. Annexes were added later. The greatly enlarged membership includes descendants of early communicants. (1977)
