Sacred Heart Church
Montegut, Terrebonne County · Louisiana
Sacred Heart is a church the storms keep rebuilding. By the parish's account it was established on November 9, 1864 to serve Bayou Grand Caillou, Bayou Petit Caillou, Bourg, Isle de Jean Charles, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Montegut. A storm destroyed the first church, in lower Montegut, in 1909; a second, built in 1894 in the town itself, was struck by lightning in 1954; the Romanesque church standing now was finished in 1956. In 1921 a priest of Sacred Heart received permission to build the first chapel at Pointe-aux-Chenes, which a hurricane destroyed in 1926.
