Rockville Stone Chapel

The carved stone over the door still reads M. E. Church South. The Methodists had split North and South over slavery in 1844, and this congregation split the same way: its Northern faction left on Christmas Eve 1863 to form its own church. Volunteers raised the chapel from local stone in the fall of 1856, on five acres Landy and Sarah Alford let go for fifty dollars. The last resident pastor left in 1895, the church gave the chapel up in 1929, and the WPA rebuilt it in 1940. A Church of Christ congregation meets in it.

Church South Erected 1856 This historic monument erected A.D. 1856 by Solano County pioneers reconstructed by Federal Works Agency Work Projects Administration A.D. 1940 Rockville Stone Chapel Erected by pioneers of Methodist Episcopal Church South with volunteer labor and donated funds. Cornerstone laid October 3, 1856. Dedicated February 1857. Site supplied by Landy and Sarah Alford. Chapel deteriorated by 1929 and deeded by the church to Rockville Public Cemetery District as a pioneer monument. Restored in 1940. California Registered Historical Landmark No. 779 Plaque placed by the California State Park Commission in cooperation with the Solano County Historical Society, May 30, 1963.
