Rock Hill Baptist Church
Quitman, Wood County · Texas
Erected 1970
The Handbook of Texas ties the church to the school where it began. A school stood on the Coke Road at Rock Hill by 1870, and that year a Baptist church was organized there. A Rock Hill public school district was established in 1884, and in 1905 the school had seventy-three White and fifty-seven Black students. The school later moved to the junction of Farm Road 2966 and County Road 1370. The same entry says Andrew Gilbreath settled the area in 1850 and that the community was reportedly named for a local geological formation.
