Pleasant Grove School & Cemetery
Winnsboro, Wood County · Texas
Erected 1997
The Handbook of Texas follows the Pleasant Grove school as it grew. In 1896 the four-teacher school had 177 White students. A two-story school was built in 1904, and in 1905 it reported more than 200 White students and four teachers. For a time beginning in 1907 the community also had a college. A one-story school replaced the 1904 building in 1926, on the same site. The entry dates the community to 1872, when Henry Robinson built a blacksmith shop, and says a combined church and school went up in 1874.
What the plaque says
Pleasant Grove School & Cemetery Land for a community school and cemetery was donated by Henry and Mary Robinson in the 1870s. A one-room log schoolhouse was replaced by several larger buildings as population in the area grew. Professor D. Speer, a teacher at the school, named the community and the school Pleasant Grove in the 1880s. The school was consolidated in 1956 with the Winnsboro School District. Located behind the schoolhouse, the cemetery dates to 1879 with the oldest recorded burial, that of Henry A. Brummett. Still active, the site is maintained by a cemetery association. (1997)
