Randolph County Court House
Pocahontas, Randolph County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Pocahontas has had three Randolph County courthouses. Thomas S. Drew and Cinderella Bettis gave the land in 1837, and the first building, put up by 1839, collapsed because it was poorly built. John A. McKay of Helena built the second, finished in early 1875, and it served for more than sixty years. In World War II it became an entertainment center for servicemen from the Walnut Ridge flying school. The third, an Art Deco courthouse across the street designed by Eugene John Stern, was dedicated on December 28, 1940, and cost about $130,000, with a WPA grant paying $49,250.
