Phelps Dodge General Office Building
Bisbee, Cochise County County · Arizona
This was the room Bisbee's copper was run from. From 1895 to 1961, the building served as Phelps Dodge's general office for its Bisbee operations, the administrative center of one of the country's great copper districts. When the corporation gave it to the city in 1971, Bisbee turned the seat of company power into a public one: today it holds the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate. The building's second life lets visitors read the mining story from inside the office that once directed it.
