Paul Masson Mountain Winery

When this bronze went up in 1960 saying wine had flowed here continuously since 1852, the winery had already stopped making it, and concerts had begun under the old portal in 1958. The 1852 belongs to Almadén, the LeFranc vineyard Paul Masson married into; he built this hilltop winery in the early 1900s. The portal came out of the rubble of St. Patrick's Church in San Jose after the 1906 earthquake, and the story that it first sailed from Spain around the Horn is told as hearsay. Vines were replanted on the hill in 2004.

Paul Masson Mountain Winery From the winery that bears the name of Paul Masson, premium wines and champagne have flowed continuously since 1852, even during Prohibition under a special government license. Twice partially destroyed by earthquake and fire, the original sandstone walls still stand. The 12th century Spanish Romanesque portal came around the Horn. California Registered Historical Landmark No. 733 Plaque placed by the California State Park Commission in cooperation with the San Francisco Landmarks Council and the Sainte Claire Club, San Jose, June 29, 1960.
