Gubserville

By the bronze's own reckoning, Gubserville lived and died with its post office. Frank Gubser, a German-born barber who also kept a saloon, was its first and only postmaster, and drivers on the Saratoga stage road stopped here to exchange mail. The village, the bronze says, ceased to exist officially the day that office closed. The state registered the site in 1949, and this plaque arrived in 1986. Two of its sponsors, Alan and David Pinn, are homebuilders whose company is listed at 1475 Saratoga Avenue, beside the plaque's 1481.

Gubserville Named after Frank Gubser, a German immigrant and barber, Gubserville was an important stage, mail and teamster stop on the road between San Jose and Saratoga. Gubser served as the village's first and only postmaster, beginning July 5, 1882. Gubserville ceased to exist officially when the post office was discontinued on April 15, 1897.
