Original Site of Neiman-Marcus
Dallas, Dallas County · Texas
Erected 1982
Two of the founders came from rival stores. The Handbook of Texas says Herbert Marcus had been a buyer for Sanger Brothers and his sister Carrie an assistant buyer at A. Harris and Company, the city's two leading department stores, and that Al Neiman met Carrie at Harris. They opened during the Panic of 1907, and neither Carrie, in the hospital, nor Herbert, sick with typhoid, was there on opening day. They billed the shop as a specialty store, not a department store. Neiman sold his interest in 1928 for $250,000.
What the plaque says
Original Site of Neiman-Marcus On September 10, 1907, the first Neiman - Marcus store opened at this site. Established by Herbert Marcus, Sr., his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman and her husband A. L. Neiman, it was founded on the principles of innovative marketing concepts and quality merchandise. Located in the center of Dallas' early retail district, the store was the cornerstone of the firm's later development as one of the leading retail establishments of the city and the nation. A fire destroyed the building here in 1913 and a new structure was built at Main and Ervay streets. (1982)
