Oregon Trail

Natrona County · Wyoming
Erected by State of Wyoming, 1914

Wyoming's first state markers came out of House Bill 39, which Governor Joseph M. Carey signed on February 20, 1913: $2,500 to survey and mark the Oregon Trail, and a penalty for defacing the stones. The Daughters of the American Revolution, led by Grace Raymond Hebard, had pushed it through, and the new commission marked twenty-four sites in its first two years. This granite shaft is the 1914 marker the commission sent to Casper's Clementina Nicolaysen. It was first set up near the railroad depot and was moved here to Fort Caspar around 1926.
