Old Mission Reservoir
Ventura, Ventura County · California
No plaque stands here, only the city's illustrated sign. The barrel-vaulted building, nicknamed El Caballo for the worn animal head carved as the spout of the fountain beside it, was built in 1792 by Chumash workers under Friar Pedro Benito Cambón as the settling tank of the mission's water system. By 1815 a seven-mile aqueduct fed it from the Ventura River and San Antonio Creek, and it sent water on by tile pipe to the church, a laundry and a cistern until floods broke the system in 1862.
