Old Carrollton
Alpena, Carroll County · Arkansas
Erected 1965
Carrollton lost its courthouse to a vote. Boone County was carved out in 1869, leaving the seat off center, and two of its courthouses had already burned, one in the winter of 1859-60 and another in 1866. On June 17, 1875, Berryville won the seat by twenty-eight votes. Soon after 1900 the railroad came through Alpena Pass, about three miles east, and the depot went there, along with some of the buildings. What remains is a cemetery and the 1876 Yell Masonic Lodge Hall, listed on the National Register in 1984.
