Old Agudath Achim Synagogue
Shreveport, Caddo County · Louisiana
Orthodox Jews were praying informally in Shreveport by 1884, many of them immigrants from Eastern Europe; Sam Willer arrived from Russia in 1888. Two Orthodox groups, Beth El and Beth Joseph, merged in 1902 to form Agudath Achim with 58 members. The congregation bought the Line Avenue corner in 1926 but did not build until 1938. It refurbished its building in 1974, judged the upkeep too costly, and finished a new synagogue on Village Green Drive in 1981, a year after the plaque's date.
