The place was chosen by arithmetic. On 18 November 1769, walking south on short rations, the expedition halted by a stream of good water two leagues past the Valle de los Cursos, Costansó wrote, splitting the distance so as to reach the Ranchería de la Casa Grande the following day. That was the Quiroste village near Whitehouse Creek, whose people had sent guides north with the column in October. The state made this camp a landmark only in 2020, one of two it added to the Ohlone-Portolá trail that year. Nothing marks the creek.
