Nacogdoches University
Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County · Texas
Erected 1936
The University of Nacogdoches was chartered on February 3, 1845, and the Handbook of Texas calls it probably the first nonsectarian institution of higher learning in Texas; its charter barred religious doctrines from instruction. It began with 29,712 acres of land and $2,700 in personal property. The first charter expired in 1870, and the Catholic Church managed the school until the charter was renewed on February 11, 1873. Milam Lodge No. 2 took control in 1875. The property was leased to Keachi College in 1887, and in 1904 it was deeded to the school district.
