Historical Marker
La Calle Real del Norte
Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County · Texas
Erected 1936
The marker names two peoples. The Nacogdoche, a Hasinai Caddo group, lived near present Nacogdoches, and a Spanish mission was founded in their principal village in 1716. The Nasoni, another Caddo people, split into upper and lower groups. The Handbook of Texas places the Lower Nasoni among the southwestern Hasinai near present Rusk County, where Mission San Jose de los Nazones was founded in 1716. Disease and warfare sharply reduced both, and descendants of each may be among the Caddo living in Caddo County, Oklahoma.
