Mrs. Merriweather Post
Post, Garza County · Texas
Erected 1968
The Post Cereal Company that her father built came to her by inheritance, and in the 1920s, with her husband E. F. Hutton, she moved between New York City, Palm Beach and Europe as one of the era's leading tastemakers and a major client of Cartier. Her collecting favored finely made objects with royal connections, chiefly French and Russian. In the 1950s she began planning to leave the collection to the public, buying with her curator Marvin Ross to fill its gaps, and her home, Hillwood, opened as a museum in 1977.
