Garza County
Post, Garza County · Texas
Erected 1936
The family's best-known member was José Antonio de la Garza, born in San Antonio on May 31, 1776. With the Spanish governor's permission he became the first person to coin money in Texas: small coins worth about a nickel, marked "JAG" and 1818 on one side and a single star on the other, which one writer suggests may have inspired the Lone Star. A Mexican grant of two leagues in 1824 made him one of the largest landowners in Bexar County, and about 1834 he bought Mission San Francisco de la Espada. The county was formed in 1876.
