Mission San Francisco de los Tejas

Grapeland, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1934

The marker names Dr. Albert Woldert as the man who located the site. Aldrich's county history describes him as a Tyler physician, born there May 9, 1867, in practice since 1893, and says he located the sites of both missions in Houston County even though he never lived there. The Texas Centennial Commission gave him second prize for the oldest relic, a cannon of about 1690 found near the San Francisco mission. The Handbook of Texas says more recent research puts the mission on San Pedro Creek east of Augusta, a few miles west of the replica.
