Major George Morse Collinsworth
Matagorda, Matagorda County · Texas
Erected 1936
After Goliad, Collinsworth turned from soldier to customs man. The General Council elected him collector for the port of Matagorda on December 11, 1835, and Texas kept returning him to revenue work: collector for the county in 1839, inspector of the county land office in 1840, collector for the port of Calhoun in 1841 and customs collector for the Aransas District in 1845. He married Susan Kendrick in Matagorda County on June 5, 1837, and they lived there until about 1854. By 1857 he was surveying in Karnes County. His son George Jr. served in Terry's Texas Rangers.
