Lincoln County Star City
Star City, Lincoln County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Lincoln County was a creation of Reconstruction. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says the General Assembly formed it on March 28, 1871, from parts of Arkansas, Bradley, Desha, Drew and Jefferson counties. The county court first met at Cane Creek Church on April 24, 1871, and Star City became the permanent seat even though it was not centrally located. Few battles touched the county, but on January 19, 1864, Col. Powell Clayton's cavalry clashed with a Confederate camp at Branchville and two Union soldiers were killed. A Confederate memorial went up in Star City in 1926.
