Leander Schools

Leander, Williamson County · Texas
Erected 1986

The first free school near Leander was a lodge room. The Handbook of Texas says the Bagdad Masonic lodge furnished the area's only free school from 1870 until June 1899, and the county commission says the building was taken down and rebuilt in Leander in 1893. The Leander High School Association, incorporated on June 27, 1899, was a nonprofit for fifty years, with shares at ten dollars. The district grew by consolidation: Pleasant Hill in 1928, Round Mountain and Volente in 1938, and White Stone in 1952.

What the plaque says

Leander Schools The origin of the Leander school system can be traded to the 1855 school held in Bagdad, the pre-Civil War community that disappeared after Leander was founded along the railroad. In 1893, a free public school opened in the new community. business leaders organized a high school association in 1899 to furnish support for the educational system. Students began graduating from Leander High School in 1931. Over the years, the schools have grown to accommodate increases in enrollment, while providing a vital service to the community. (1986)
