Lawrence Ranch
San Cristobal, Taos County · New Mexico
The panel calls the ranch a gift, and Lawrence would not take it as one. Mabel Dodge Luhan offered the 160-acre Kiowa Ranch on Lobo Mountain in 1924; he refused, Frieda accepted, and the Lawrences paid with the original manuscript of Sons and Lovers. He died in France in 1930, and his ashes reached the shrine in 1935. Frieda died here in 1956, is buried before the shrine, and left the ranch to the University of New Mexico, whose name heads the panel.
