Lake Grove Community

Iola, Grimes County · Texas
Erected 1992

One of the plaque's two donors carried the Civil War on his body. Hannibal Honestus Boone, born in Tennessee in 1834, studied law at Austin College in Huntsville and began practice at Hempstead in 1859. As a Confederate major under Edwin Waller he was wounded at Fordoche, Louisiana, in September 1863, losing his right arm and the thumb and two fingers of his left hand. After the war he practiced at Anderson, was attorney general from 1876, moved to Navasota in 1878, commanded the Texas division of the United Confederate Veterans from 1895, and died there in 1897.

What the plaque says

Lake Grove Community Grimes County law partners Ben Goodrich and H. H. Boone (Texas Attorney General 1876-78), donated four acres of land at this location to trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1874 for church, school, and cemetery use by the surrounding loosely-knit farm community of Lake Grove. The community promptly built a church structure that they used for religious and school purposes. 100 students attended the Lake Grove School in 1900. The still active Lake Grove Cemetery, with gravestones dating to 1874, contains the grave of a veteran of the American Civil War. (1992)
