Lake Charles High School Kilties
Lake Charles, Calcasieu County · Louisiana
The Kilties were built for halftimes. KPLC's account says the drill team, organized in 1939, wore tailored uniforms with braided shoulders and a shawl, and spent more than 40 years in parades and stadium shows. Their appearances in the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl brought national notice, and their intricate field formations may have influenced later halftime designs. The group ended when Lake Charles High School merged with Boston High School. McNeese State University's library keeps a special archive honoring them, and a local artist recreates the uniforms on porcelain dolls.
