Knox County
Benjamin, Knox County · Texas
Erected 1936
The Handbook of Texas reports that Spaniards were said to have mined copper along the Brazos here with Indian conscripts. Capt. Randolph B. Marcy surveyed the Brazos and Wichita valleys through the area in 1854, and in 1855 troops of the Second Cavalry patrolled nearby. The county was attached to Baylor County in 1879; in 1880 it had three farms or ranches and seventy-seven residents. Robert D. Goree, a cattleman who arrived in 1882, encouraged farmers to come, founded Goree at Riley Springs by 1887, and German Catholics founded Rhineland in 1895.
