First Christian Church
Knox City, Knox County · Texas
Erected 1967
Knox City was founded ahead of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient, which began service in 1906, and was first named Orient for the railroad. R. W. Warren and others donated the townsite, and Warren built the first cotton gin in 1905. The town got city water and sewers in 1922, after fires in 1911 and 1919 did heavy damage, and natural gas in 1924. A tornado in March 1953 struck the county hospital, killing four people and damaging fifty homes. The state's first seed-testing plant opened here in 1965, and the town had 1,219 people in 2000.
