The map in the panel's lower corner is the expedition's first published one. Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, no relation to Meriwether, copied it from William Clark's original drawing, and Samuel Harrison engraved it for the 1814 History of the Expedition, which Nicholas Biddle finished after Lewis's death. It gave the first accurate picture of how the sources of the Missouri and the Columbia lay against the Rocky Mountains. A Clark manuscript map of about 1810, possibly its basis, is at Yale. The panel lays today's Montana over it.
